Police Department

Founded in 1974, the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department (OHAPD) was created to supplement the efforts of the Oakland Police Department in preventing and addressing unlawful activities on and/and Authority-owned/controlled properties.

A California Police Officer Standards and Training (CA POST) participating agency, OHAPD has an authorized strength of 45 positions, of which thirty-four positions are sworn police officers under 830.31(d) PC.  The Department employs eleven professional staff members who are assigned to departmental functions including communications, records, parking enforcement, and administrative functions. OHAPD operates as a supplemental policing entity to the City of Oakland Police Department (OPD) in Oakland, CA. OPD is the primary law enforcement agency in Oakland.

Led by Chief Alan Love, the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department works cooperatively and in collaboration with all Oakland Housing Authority divisions in service to our residents and in Partnership with the Community. The key principles of Honor, Integrity, and Service are the focus of OHAPD’s commitment to the residents and community.

The Oakland Housing Authority Police Department has received international accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (C.A.L.E.A) in March 1999 and was reaccredited in 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014, 2017, and 2021.
